Melbourne has officially made history again, with 1,424 people coming together at Fed Square to set a new world record for the largest cheerleading dance.
Led by the San Francisco 49ers Gold Rush Cheerleaders, participants of all ages filled Fed Square to learn and perform a specially choreographed routine together, bringing the world record to Australia as Melbourne celebrates the arrival of NFL Game Week.
In celebration of Australia’s first-ever NFL Regular Season Game, Visit Victoria partnered with the San Francisco 49ers and Fed Square for the record-breaking event.
The previous record was set in Japan in 2015, when 1,371 people took part in a single cheerleading dance.
Melbourne raised the bar, with 1,424 participants successfully completing the
routine to establish a new world record.
The Melbourne Cheer Challenge brought together cheerleaders, dancers, families, 49ers fans and first-timers for a huge community celebration on Father’s Day in Australia, with the 49ers Gold Rush leading the crowd through some of their signature moves before the record-breaking performance.
The Gold Rush are the official cheer squad of the San Francisco 49ers and have been performing at 49ers games for more than four decades. Today’s appearance was part of their first visit to Melbourne ahead of the San Francisco 49ers taking on the Los Angeles Rams at the MCG on Friday 11 September.
The record adds another historic moment to a landmark week for Melbourne, as the city prepares to host Australia’s first-ever NFL Regular Season Game.
Celebrations are set to continue across the city throughout NFL Game Week, with events,
activations and entertainment building towards Friday’s game at the MCG.
Visit Victoria CEO Brendan McClements said “We are not just the home of sport, now we’re the home of another world record. A huge congratulations to all our 49ers and cheerleading fans who showed up, got moving and helped make history is an incredible week for our State.”
San Francisco 49ers Chief Marketing Officer Stephanie Rogers said “Our goal this week has been to get out into the community and connect with as many Melburnians as possible. Seeing dancers, families, and first-timers from across Victoria unite at Fed Square to
learn this routine from our Gold Rush Cheerleaders was a powerful reminder of how sport can bring a community together.”
Fed Square Director & CEO Katrina Sedgwick said “We did it! Fed Square was absolutely electric today, with 1,424 people dancing, cheering and coming together to make history. This is exactly what Fed Square is all about – bringing people together for extraordinary, shared moments in the heart of Melbourne, Australia. A huge congratulations to everyone who stepped onto the dance floor and helped bring the world record to Melbourne.” d -
