An Australian woman, Donna Urquhart, has been the first woman in history to attempt to run the longest distance in a polar region.
Donna ran 1402.21km in 28 days in Antarctica, the coldest, windiest and driest desert on earth. She ran an average of 50 km per day over 28 running days between 15 December 2023 and 14 January 2024.
Her momentous run was completed at Union Glacier Camp in Antarctica and Donna was supported on the ground by her husband Rhys, and team members, Anthony Lance, Annie Ting, and Tom Phillips.
The team also launched a campaign to raise awareness of the high dropout rate of teenage girls from sport and raise funds for a number of sport charities to help increase female participation.
Donna said “By pushing my own physical boundaries in this world record attempt I want to show young girls and women what’s possible when you harness the power of the body and mind.”
Donna’s son Max, who is 11 years old, said “What Mum has achieved is awesome. I want to support her on her next adventure and I hope one day I can break her world record in Antarctica.”
