A chemist called C. P. Callister invented vegemite in 1923 as a copycat for the UK brand Marmite, but in the end they didn’t quite taste the same. The vegemite recipe contains brewer’s yeast sourced from Carlton & United Breweries, Victoria Bitter. Vegemite has been manufactured in Port Melbourne since 1923.
