Australia’s and the world’s heaviest oyster is like a pet parade but for giant oysters!
A favourite at Australia’s biggest rock oyster shellabration, Narooma Oyster Festival, this competition formally recognises the impressive weights that the Pacific Oyster (Crassostrea gigas) can reach in the rich estuaries of the south coast of New South Wales.
Australia’s Biggest Oyster is decided by weight, and The Australian Book of Records (TABOR) recognises this world record set by weight, with other record organisations using length as their world record measurement.
At 3.01kg growers Sharryn & Bernie Connell, from Batemans Bay surpassed the world record by a whopping 1.9kg, albeit Jill, their oyster is 8.5cm shorter in length.
Rules:
1. Must be a single oyster – nothing piggybacking on it.
2. Must be alive.
3: Winner is the heaviest oyster.
4. If a draw, then length will determine the winner.
This event is proudly supported by Australia’s Oyster Coast, Australia’s largest producer of Rock Oysters and the Narooma Rocks team.
“The Australian Book of Records made a decision to accept the biggest oyster by weight and congratulate the Bernie, Sharryn and the Narooma Oyster Festival for their outstanding achievement on their new world record.”
