On Australia Day, 26 January 2025, Superintendent Dave Scutchings APM and his co-pilot (and son) broke a World Record for the most consecutive loops in a flight by glider. Dave and Max smashed the previous record of 24 by completing 45 loops.
As part of his 50th birthday celebrations Superintendent Scutchings set himself the target of '50 weeks of 50 challenges' – each week seeing him doing something memorable, challenging and unique.
The high-flying duo carved their names into the record books by completing 45 loops – they were keen to hit 50 loops but while they fell five short, their tally was almost double the previous record.
Superintendent Scutchings is a qualified aeroplane and glider pilot who has spent more than 12 years flying as a Tactical Flight Officer on the police helicopter. As an experienced manager in SAPOL, he has seen the critical role that SA Police Legacy has played in supporting SAPOL members and their families so he chose to combine his life-long passion for aviation with supporting this important charity. He is using this record-breaking effort to reach a fundraising target of $20,000 for SA Police Legacy and is well on his way to achieving this.
