The longest strike in Australia’s history

The longest strike in Australia’s history
On the 23rd of August, 1966, Vincent Lingiari, an Aboriginal stockman and land rights leader led two hundred of his people, employees of Wave Hill station together with their families in a ‘walk-off’. He said he was sick of his people being treated like dogs in their own country.

Encouraged by Brian Manning and Dexter Daniels, of the North Australian Workers Union, he demanded better pay and rations, and protection of the Aboriginal women. The Gurindji strike lasted nine years, the longest in Australian history.
